Here on FMDesign the two categories on the index are each 50% of the full width; is there a way to have 3 categories but make one category span 100% and the other two span 50% each

Yeah, it's possible. You can have a rule which sets all categories to be a specific width :
Code:
.forabg {
  width:50%;
  display:inline-block;
}

Then you can have a rule after this one which modifies a specific category :
Code:
.forabg:nth-child(0) {
  width:auto;
  display:block;
}
You can use nth-child or if your categories have a specific id you can use that to your advantage.

@Ange Tuteur you never told me that other pages with the
Code:
.forabg
class would be affected. I think it's better to use the
Code:
:nth-child
selector for the two forums I want to be 50% width Smile

Oh right, mostly sub-forums will be affected by it, but you can override that with this rule :
Code:
#wrap h1.page-title ~ .forabg {
  display:block;
  width:auto;
}
