@Joost of course, anything on this theme is customizable ! 
The only difference with the icons is that they're set with FontAwesome and CSS, BUT you can still use images. This is the CSS you'd need to use :
NOTE : the image links currently are just your avatar to serve as an example, replace them with the images that you want. Also, the images should be at or below 35*40px.
