Hi @Emmi,

That's a feature of the Xenforo forum software, not Forumotion, though it is possible to replicate on the inbox or notifications w/CSS and maybe a bit of JS. What's the URL of your forum ?

Here's a quick and simple mockup for the PMs and toolbar notifications. Add the following CSS to your stylesheet :
Code:
/* new message style (requires script) */
.new-message {
  position:relative;
}

.new-message-count:after {
  content:attr(data-messages);
  color:#FFF;
  background:#F00;
  text-align:center;
  line-height:12px;
  min-width:12px;
  position:absolute;
  right:0;
  top:-13px;
  padding:2px;
  border-radius:3px;
}

/* notification style */
#fa_toolbar #fa_right #fa_notifications.unread #notif_unread {
  color:#FFF;
  font-size:10px;
  background:#F00;
  padding:3px;
  border-radius:3px;
  position:relative;
  top:-6px;
}

For the PMs, you'll need a small script to get the notification number, so go to Admin Panel > Modules > JS Codes management and create a new script with the following settings.

Placement : In all the pages
Code:
$(function() {
  var newMsg = document.querySelector('.new-message');

  if (newMsg) {
    newMsg.innerHTML = newMsg.innerHTML.replace(/(\d+)/, '<span class="new-message-count" data-messages="$1">$1</span>');
  }
});

It sounds like that might be related to a profile preference. Go to Profile > Preferences and disabled the option "Display a pop-up window for new private messages."
