Okay well here is my thoughts.
I thought it was a man or a human because you walk on all four as a baby, 2 as a adult and three when you get old and need a cane.
And my guess for where is comes from is a sphinx.

Okay well a sphinx is from Egypt (duh) and it is in a possition where it is on all four legs and some sphinx or mummies also as a cane nearby which they can either walk on two legs or three (with the cane) This is very hard to explain. I have it kinda in my head but not sure how to get it out. Am I somewhat near the answer here?

Okay, lets try this again.
History: The classic riddle presented to Oedipus Rex by the Sphinx in Greek Mythology. He was the first one to solve it—all the others who failed were eaten by the Sphinx—after which she threw herself down a chasm. This is one of the oldest Stock Puzzles out there, going back to the Greek writer Apollodorus in the second century AD.

Outside the city of Thebes Oedipus comes upon the Sphinx who controls the city. The Sphinx stops all travelers to ask them a riddle. No one has answered correctly and all have been eaten by the Sphinx.
